CHAPTER TEN

KENDALL SHARED STORIES and read from her book for about half an hour, then fielded questions. She was glowing, a woman in her element. Megan watched the faces in the crowd, trying to gauge reactions. Carol and Betty were skeptical, at best. A few others in the audience gave an occasional raised eyebrow or smirk, but most looked enthralled. Megan decided it wouldn’t be fair to jump to conclusions. She needed to study the evidence herself. She needed to read those books.

After the talk, Kendall sat down at a table with stacks of her books, a pen to sign them with, and a broad smile. Readers and travelers lined up to meet her and the other bloggers and writers who had managed to claim tables before Owen had declared there was simply no more room. People from all over Emerson Falls were milling about with excitement, travel dreams forging new trails in their heads as they chatted with the bloggers, vloggers, and writers. Megan saw several writers with their phones out again, taking videos, talking with would-be travelers and other attendees live online. She realized that Emerson Falls was being broadcast all over the world, literally. Her hopes were mixed: that her little town was making a good showing, and that not too many people would come. A few visitors, yes, to help Lily fill her Bed and Breakfast, to help Rae keep the pub open, and to help all the other local business people make a living. But not so many that the town would lose its charm. Not so many that it became more of a tourist attraction than a home. Emerson Falls was special. Pristine.

Well, pristine, except for a few murders now and then, Megan thought.

At two o’clock, the event was winding down and Megan finally felt she could excuse herself. She didn’t feel a need to be present at every event in the conference rooms, but an event in the library itself required her attendance, she thought. She would have felt strange and wrong leaving it to someone else. Not that she didn’t trust anyone—Owen certainly had everything more than under control. But the library was her space, her domain. She needed to be there.

At least, until the event was over. The library would be open for the rest of the afternoon, in conjunction with the wine and restaurant event downstairs, but Megan’s library staff could handle general traffic. The pull of Patrick Bates’ books and Kendall’s book was too great to be put off anymore. Megan half-ran up the staircase to her apartment, grabbed the books from a table near the front door, stopped briefly at her AeroPress, then headed outside to read, the aroma from a mug of perfect coffee thrilling her senses.

“What is better than this?” Megan asked the river as she sat with the books in her lap, the Skagit River racing before her, an eagle flying overhead, and the cup of coffee just waiting to become one with her blood stream.
